Pronunciation is a rough guide. If your child's teacher says it differently, go with the teacher.

How to use this at home

Your child practises the exact spelling of 5 Irish words about colours. Because the letters have to match exactly, they quickly learn that a fada matters: á is a different letter from a, just as it is in their school copybook.

  1. When a word has a fada, point it out before searching ("look for the í with the line on top"). That habit pays off later when they write the words themselves.
  2. Once the grid is done, cover the English in the word list and see how many meanings your child remembers. Then swap: you say the English, they find the Irish word in the list.
  3. When your child finishes a drawing, ask them to name the colours they used in Irish.
