Pronunciation is a rough guide. If your child's teacher says it differently, go with the teacher.

How to use this at home

Your child practises the exact spelling of 4 Irish words about colours. Because the letters have to match exactly, they quickly learn that a fada matters: á is a different letter from a, just as it is in their school copybook.

  1. Once the grid is done, cover the English in the word list and see how many meanings your child remembers. Then swap: you say the English, they find the Irish word in the list.
  2. Make it a race: you look for one word while your child looks for another. The answer key on page 2 settles any arguments.
  3. Play "I spy" with colours: name a colour in Irish and find something that matches. For example, buí means "yellow".
