Pronunciation is a rough guide. If your child's teacher says it differently, go with the teacher.

How to use this at home

Your child practises the exact spelling of 4 Irish words about animals. Because the letters have to match exactly, they quickly learn that a fada matters: á is a different letter from a, just as it is in their school copybook.

  1. Read the word list together before starting, using the English meanings beside each word. Your child ticks each word off as they find it.
  2. When a word has a fada, point it out before searching ("look for the í with the line on top"). That habit pays off later when they write the words themselves.
  3. Play "guess the animal": describe it in English and your child answers in Irish.
